Am I a candidate for LASIK?

People who want to minimize their dependence on glasses or contact lenses make good candidates for LASIK. Lifestyle, hobbies, and amount of correction needed are all factors that may determine whether or not you are a good candidate.

The ideal candidate for LASIK is over 18 years of age, not pregnant, and free of any eye disease. You should not have had a change in your prescription in the last year, and should have a refractive error within the range of correction for LASIK. You must also be willing to accept the potential risks, complications and side effects.

It is important that anyone considering LASIK have realistic expectations. LASIK allows people to perform most of their everyday tasks without corrective lenses. However, people looking for guaranteed perfect vision without glasses or contacts run the risk of being disappointed.

The vast majority of people who have LASIK achieve somewhere between 20/20 and 20/40 vision without glasses or contact lenses. If vision is undercorrected after the procedure, your doctor may decide to perform a second surgery, called an enhancement, to further refine your results.

What is LASIK?

Laser assisted in situ keratomileusis, or LASIK, is an outpatient surgical procedure on the cornea that treats myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. LASIK uses a microsurgical instrument and a laser to reshape the cornea (the clear covering of the eye) to improve the way the eye focuses light rays on the retina.

LASIK may decrease your dependence on glasses and contacts or, in some cases, will allow you to do without them entirely. Most people who have this procedure are corrected to 20/40 vision and many people achieve 20/20 vision or better!

The VISX Star S2TM Excimer Laser System produces a “cool” or non-thermal light beam as most of its heat is dissipated into the air. This makes it ideal for corneal surgery because it eliminates the possibility of thermal damage to surrounding tissue. Its accuracy, combined with its non-thermal characteristics, provide refractive surgeons with a tool that can deliver more consistent and predictable results than incisional procedures such as Radial Keratonomy. VISX technology and support is unsurpassed and its proven track record is why we chose this laser.

The Procedure...

Christopher S. Shumake, M.D.

After your eye has been completely numbed using “eye drop” anesthesia, an eyelid holder will be place between your eyelids to prevent you from blinking.

Next, an instrument known as a microkeratome makes a protective flap in the cornea. During this process you may feel a little pressure, but no discomfort. You will be asked to look at a target light while the laser reshapes the cornea, usually less than a minute. Then, the protective flap is replaced where it bonds securely without the need for stitches. After LASIK, some patients report a slight discomfort that usually goes away within twelve to twenty-four hours.

Almost everyone experiences some dryness in the eyes and fluctuating vision during the day. These symptoms usually fade within one month, although some patients will continue to have symptoms for longer periods to time.

When you visit LASIK Vision Center, you will experience incomparable personalized service. Our unprecedented level of attention is like no other.
